5 Risks That Women Face When They Get Pregnant At 43 Years Of Age

Many women who have not started their families yet by 35 begin to panic that their biological clock is ticking. They also begin to regret the fact that they spent too much time during their 20’s and in their early 30’s focusing on their careers, their traveling, and their lives. These women had always intended to become mothers but were not in a hurry to become a mother during the time that they wanted to focus on themselves. And that is always the time when their fertility is at its peak.

However, they should be happy to know that the risks of them having unhealthy pregnancies and unhealthy babies does not increase by that much by the time they are 35. The risks increase more however once these women hit 40, and the risks actually increase a lot more by the time the woman hits 43 years of age.

And believe it or not, the odds for a 43-year-old woman facing a complication during pregnancy and/or conceiving a baby with birth defects are higher than for a woman at even 42!

Let’s look at the 5 type of risks that a 43-year-old woman and older getting pregnant could face:

There is less than a 5 percent chance of getting pregnant at 43 in any given month – The odds of getting pregnant at 30 in any given month are about 20 percent. However, once a woman hits 40, the odds are even lower, and once a woman hits the age of 43, there is a less than 5 percent chance that she will get pregnant. That is because the quality of the eggs decline which means that more often than not if an egg were to become fertilized, it would end up not being viable. Additionally, during this time, women hit perimenopause which happens about 10 years before menopause happens.

Getting Pregnant At 43 Can Most Definitely Result In A Twin Pregnancy – During perimenopause, more of your eggs are being released and as a result, this can easily result in multiple pregnancies. The odds of a 25-year-old woman getting pregnant with twins unless twins run in her family is about 1 in 40. However, the odds of a woman at 43 or even 42 getting pregnant with twins is 1 in 40. Those are pretty high odds and it is because she is at a stage where the eggs are being released in overdrive because of the fact that menopause is on the horizon.

The Risk Of Miscarriage Is 50 percent – You have heard that the risk of miscarriage in the first trimester is 10 percent, however, when a pregnant woman is in her late 30’s the odds are higher as it is 20 percent. However, once a woman is 43 and older, the odds of a miscarriage happening is 50 percent. The odds of having a stillbirth is also a lot higher at this age as well.

The Risk Of Having A Baby With Down’s Syndrome Or Other Chromosomal Abnormalities Is 1 in 35 – The risk of a woman under the age of 30 having a baby with Down’s Syndrome or other chromosomal abnormalities is 1 in 2500 unless there is a genetic risk. That is highly unlikely. And the odds jump to 1 in 350 over 35 but the odds are against it even so. And at 40 the odds are 1 in 100, and by 43 the odds jump to 1 in 35 which is a lot riskier. That is something to realize when a woman gets pregnant at 43.

Any Pregnancy Complication Has A Higher Chance Of Happening – Pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes are a lot more likely to happen at 43 even more so than at 40. That means if a woman gets pregnant at 43, then she will need to be carefully monitored during her pregnancy. Now, if you are in your early 40’s and you have been struggling with infertility or are starting late in life – and you want to have your own kids, don’t let this scare you. You can always go to a reputable IVF clinic that screens embryos that provide a special procedure called PGS to ensure that the embryos are healthy which will be transferred. This way, you can bypass the odds of those risks. It is an expensive option but one that is well worth it for women who want to get pregnant at 43 or even older. If this is you, then best of luck!!
